NAB Round 2 – Kangaroos V Fremantle

Jeff Farmer did a dumb thing during the 2007 NAB Cup. I dunno why. Jeff probably doesn’t either.

It was a bad thing to do and Jeff Farmer was suspended for 6 weeks. Fair enough. Just need that consistency stuff.

Match Review Panel Assessment:

A Level 4 offence and 425 activation points. Farmers existing poor record and 95.86 residual points from last 12 months increases this to 605.86 points.

Result: 6 weeks suspension

Note: this isn’t the best footage of the incident – if anyone has anything better, let me know.

Round 3 – Fremantle V West Coast

This was a pretty spiteful match, with lots of ugly things going on. During one of those ugly incidents, TV cameras caught Adam Selwood and Des Headland with hands on each others face (the same thing that Nick Holland was Reprimanded for). Or were there fingers in eyes??

Result: Not Reported

Round 7: Western Bulldogs V Melbourne

For some reason the Match Review Panel didn’t consider Nick Hollands actions Eye Gouging – it was “unnecessary and unreasonable contact to the face” of Brad Johnson.

Bizzare. Of the “Eye Gouging” incidents this year, Brad Johnson received the worst injury – have a look at the end of the video.

Match Review Panel Assessment:

Ben Holland, Melbourne, has been charged with misconduct in that he made unnecessary and unreasonable contact to the face of Brad Johnson, Western Bulldogs, during the third quarter of the Round Seven match between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, played at Telstra Dome on Sunday May 13, 2007.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). The Match Review Panel referred the incident directly to the Tribunal for its determination as there is no set demerit points attributed to the offence. He has no applicable good or bad record.

Result: Reprimand (no suspension)

Round 9: Hawthorn V West Coast

Chris Judd is the AFLs best player. Chris Judds fingers were in Cameron Browns eye – have a look at the video and tell me I’m wrong.

Jeff Farmer was suspended for 4 weeks (plus two more for a poor record). You would’ve expected Judd to get close to that, but the MRP decided it was only worth one. The the Tribunal said it didn’t actually happen.

Wayne Carey said on the Channel 9 Sunday Footy Show that he expected Judd to get off, but “if it was reversed, I would say Brown would get maybe one, maybe two”. He’s not the only one with this opinion.

And another thing – why were Hawthorn so desperate to get Judd off??

Match Review Panel Assessment:

Chris Judd, West Coast, has been charged with misconduct in that he eye-gouged Campbell Brown, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the Round Nine match between West Coast and Hawthorn, played at Aurora Stadium on Saturday May 26, 2007.

In summary, his prior record means that the sanction must remain at one match.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing record of one match suspended within the last three years, which increases the penalty by 10 per cent to 137.50 points. An early plea would reduce the sanction by 25 per cent to a 103.13 points and a one-match sanction.

The Tribunal Verdict:

West Coast contested and Judd was cleared at the Tribunal. Judd got off partly because Cameron Brown said he felt pain in his right eye, but “the fingers never entered my eye”. Also, the umpire didn’t think the incident warranted a free kick, but reported it afterwards anyway. Riiiiight.

The most of important thing out of all of this is, of course, is that Judd can still win the Brownlow. And justice was done, somewhere …

Result: Cleared (No Suspension). Amazing.
